Portrait of the sephiroth Binah, she is the matriarch of the feminine pillar in the tree of life within the kabalistic world Briah. Represented by the older woman presenting a chalice. Briah is the world in which creation manifests, giving life to our physical forms. The tree of life can be interpreted as the 12 steps to ascension, with three spiritual realms at the head, Father, son and Holy Spirit (Binah). Below them are the seven physical sephiroth sometimes interpreted as our chakras which also relate to the zodiac. Binah is represented by the color black, because her astrological planet is Saturn. This is where the dark color pallet is drawn from. Further representation of Saturn is seen within the Chalice which is made up of Saturn’s sickle and the upside down triangle which is the feminine sign for water.

Each sephiroth is a virtue that we must internalize in order to ascend to the next kabalistic world. The lesson that Briah teaches us is that of spiritual intelligence and understanding that guides us to experience empathy. Empathy is the essentially the loss of ego so that we can reach outside our own senses to experience another’s emotion as our own. In the Bible she is referred to as the Breath of life, which is why she exists with the realm of creation. In the Bible she is referenced in Genesis 1:2 “Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Light, be.’ And there was light.”
